Teachers to go on strike over Junior Cert Teachers objecting to Junior Cert changes are threatening a wave of one-day strikes that will close 500 schools, forcing 250,000 students to stay home. The Association of Secondary Teachers' Ireland (ASTI) is ratcheting up its campaign of resistance against the reforms, with stoppages planned from September. The other second-level teachers' union, the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI), has signed up for the new junior cycle and its members are currently being trained in the revised curriculum. But ASTI hardliners are pushing a 'no compromise' stance and the union's powerful Standing Committee took the decision, in principle, on strike action this week. Kurdistan Expands from Iraq to Northern Syria

Kurds declare federal region in Syria's north Syria's Kurds on Thursday declared a federal region in the country's north, officials told AFP, but both the government and an opposition coalition swiftly rejected the announcement. Two officials at talks involving Kurdish, Arab, and other parties in the town of Rmeilan said delegates had agreed on creating a "federal system" unifying the three mainly Kurdish cantons in northern Syria . "We have given our blessing for the establishment of a federal system in Rojava (the three cantons) and northern Syria," said Aldar Khalil, a member of the conference's preparatory committee. The declaration risks angering Turkey which is wary of any bid by Syrian Kurds to solidify their autonomy. The move will centralise governance in areas that Kurdish parties and their allies already control. The borders and other administrative details concerning the region would be discussed on Thursday, offi...

Newly elected Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghail is at the centre of a bitter local row over who should replace his running mate on Kildare County Council. Supporters of first-time TD Fiona O'Loughlin believe that the Ó Fearghail camp scuppered the chances of her preferred candidate at a selection convention last Saturday. It is normal practice that a councillor who becomes a TD is given the opportunity to co-opt their replacement.   Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghail It is   understood that Ms O'Loughlin favoured long-time party activist Anne Duggan Connolly, but votes piled in for Murty Aspell, who was seen as the favourite candidate of Mr Ó Fearghail. Two other candidates, Noel Heavey and Ger Elwood, were also on the ballot paper. As Ceann Comhairle, Mr Ó Fearghail is guaranteed a seat in the Kildare South constituency at the next election and, as such, is expected to steer clear of party politics. But a source said: "It was known that Fiona wanted...

Germanwings crash: Pilot confidentiality 'should be relaxed' The faces of some of those on board the Airbus 320 Who were the victims? What drives people to murder-suicide? Who was Andreas Lubitz? The report, by the BEA investigation agency, said confidentiality had to be balanced with the risk an individual might pose to public safety and that "clearer rules" were needed. It was also critical of pilots being able to make self-declarations about their health, which allowed them to hide any illnesses. The plane crashed in the French Alps almost a year ago French investigators have called for medical confidentiality to be relaxed for pilots, in the wake of last year's Germanwings disaster. Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz was urged by a doctor to attend psychiatric hospital weeks before he crashed the plane on 24 March 2015, but his employer was never alerted, their final report says . All 150 people on board died as Fligh...
